Surgeon Who Sued Hospital For Malpractice Awarded Damages

Posted on

Sometimes, injuries suffered in a surgery result in an individual from New Jersey no longer being able to work in their chosen career. The loss of income this can cause can be financially devastating. When a surgical injury that had employment-related effects on a person was caused by negligence by a doctor or a hospital, legal options for seeking compensation from the negligent parties for lost wages may be available to the victim.

Damages for lost wages were part of a damage award that a jury recently granted in a medical malpractice case from another state, Ohio.

The recipient of the award was a surgeon who had brought a lawsuit claiming that surgical negligence at a hospital resulted in him suffering injuries that had serious career impacts on him.

The surgeon underwent a surgery on his left eye at the hospital in January 2011. The surgery was aimed at addressing some eye injuries the surgeon had that had apparently occurred during a surgery he had performed at the hospital in February 2010.

According to the surgeon, surgical negligence occurred while his eye was being operated on and this negligence led to his iris being torn and his pupil being destroyed. The surgeon claims that this damage has made it so he cannot perform surgical operations.

The total amount of the award that the jury granted to the surgeon after finding in his favor in the case was $7.7 million. Purportedly, the hospital has not ruled out bringing an appeal in the case.
