What is Plagiocephaly?
Often referred to as “flat head syndrome,” deformational or positional plagiocephaly is a condition that results in an infant’s head being permanently misshapen. Plagiocephaly can occur when newborns consistently sleep in the same position and the pressure creates a flat spot on the soft bones of the skull. It can also happen when the child’s head simply fails to return to its normal shape on its own.
It is normal for babies to be born with misshapen heads due to the pressure that is put on their skulls during the delivery process. In the vast majority of cases, the condition corrects itself. When it does not, however, swift action must be taken to correct the issue. This is especially true in situations where the condition is still apparent at the age of six months.
While many try to claim that plagiocephaly is merely a cosmetic issue, increasing amounts of evidence indicate that it can contribute heavily to a variety of health concerns, including cognitive, vision and dental issues.
Failure to Diagnose and Treat Plagiocephaly: The Cost of Medical Negligence
Doctors have a responsibility to recognize and monitor potential cases of plagiocephaly. Helmet therapy has proven to be a very effective treatment for the condition, however, the timing is critical. If the doctor waits too long to prescribe the treatment, the condition might already be permanent.
If your child is living with the complications of plagiocephaly, you should speak to a qualified attorney who can help you understand if a doctor’s negligence may have contributed to it.
