Cancer Misdiagnosis in Atlantic County, New Jersey
The aforementioned wrongful death case, Horton v. Stanley, was filed by the mother of Shaina Horton, an Ocean City woman whose untimely death occurred at the age of 26, after doctors’ failed to diagnose her cancer. Shaina left behind a daughter, Zoe Horton, who is now 6-years-old.
Shaina initially went to a hospital on July 19, 2010, approximately three months after giving birth to Zoe. Shaina was experiencing significant vaginal bleeding at the time. One of the obstetricians in this case, Dr. Linda Stanley, assumed that Shaina had suffered a miscarriage and sent her home.
On July 30 of the same year, Shaina returned to the hospital because of the bleeding, at which time members of the medical staff discovered a lesion on her cervix and urethra. She sought treatment from another obstetrician, Dr. Louis Wesley, who addressed the bleeding, removed the lesion, and ordered lab testing. Shaina saw yet another obstetrician on August 17, Dr. Adebola Nnewihe, who did not conduct an examination.
Just days later, Shaina suffered a brain hemorrhage. She was finally diagnosed with stage 4 choriocarcinoma. Although initial cancer treatments were effective, the cancer returned and ultimately claimed her life. Choriocarcinoma is a form of cancer that occurs in the uterus, beginning in the tissue that will develop into the placenta during pregnancy. One of the prevailing symptoms of choriocarcinoma is irregular and heavy vaginal bleeding.
According to the medical malpractice lawsuit, doctors’ failure to diagnose her cancer allowed the disease to progress beyond the point at which Shaina’s life could be saved. In the recent decision, the jury found Stanley 45% liable, Wesley 20% liable and Nnewihe 10% liable. They awarded $4.69 million to Shaina’s estate, which will go to her daughter, Zoe.
